Hi all, my name is Grace and I live in Toronto (Canada).

Hello Grace - welcome aboard.

What sort of products do you make - there's a lot of interesting information on the forum (and a lot of nonsense - see the Naughty Corner where hi-jacked threads are put) and in Resources - available from the top navigation bar (you'll need to log in there to see more).

Whereabouts in Canada are you? There are one or two members from over there. (My Grandad was in Dawson before the first war and also spent some time on Vancouver Island after he volunteered).

I live on the outsirts of Toronto, Ontario

I started making soaps a few months ago, after my addiction to L___ products started getting too expensive. I tried the HP method but didn't have much luck so I am mostly making M&P. I also make my own bath salts, sugar scrubs and bath bombs. I made up gift baskets this year for my friends and family in lieu of Christmas gifts and everyone seems to like it.

Don't give up on HP Grace take a look at the tutorial in Members Articles it's worth persevering - or try CP. Either way you'll get lovely rich lather.

I'm sure people appreciated handmade toiletries for their prezzies.

Thanks Elaine, at first I thought my HP soap turned out fine. But over time (about 4 weeks) it has a powdery white film around the surface. If you scrape it off it seems fine. Thank goodness I didnt give any of that away.

This seems like a late development of what the CPers call "ash" - I've not met it in HP as yet, other than in some containing raw cocoa butter which developed a "bloom" similar that which can appear on some chocolate.

Post your recipe in Troubled Bubbles and we'll have a look and see whether we can suss out the cause.

Grace, I got into this because a certain store's products were too expensive for me, as well.

As far as the HP is concerned, I do sometimes find that my bars go a bit white. I think it depends on the recipe. I have plenty of recipes which didn't go white, though! Did yours have lots of olive oil or additives in?

Anyway, it's fine for your own use with the coating on, and it will probably wash off and look soap-like when you actually use it.

Thanks again for the warm welcome. After doing some research I suspect my failed attempt at making soap was an inexpense kitchen scale I purchased at my local grocery store for $20 (Cdn). I need to invest in a better quality scale.
