Hello!

Been having a ponder about making wax tarts.  Does anyone have any advice, it is a good idea to buy a starter kit?  Also can you make them smell as good as the ones you can buy, you probably know which candle maker I mean! Wink

Any assistance would be most welcome

I had a go at making tarts and yes they are as good  as what you can buy, I just got a bit carried away and have enough tarts in pomegranite noir fragrance to last me a lifetime  :mwaha: I used around 7 % frgrance i think it was and they were quite strong in soy. I just had a read up on a few candle places and bought the  soy flakes. Do check that the fragrance is suitable though, not all have high flash points.

I don't make these but on the sent lasting...I got a few off a girl who used to post here but moved. They smelled yummmmy....and quite strong...I actually preferred them to the ones from the crowd you might be referring to.I still have a couple of christmassy ones nearly 2 years later and they are just as nice.

I was looking the Soap Queen's new video last night about travel candles - I so want to make them now!!!

Definetely with soy wax and I was wondering about % of FOs in them... lovely lovely lovely!

SFB - nope, you put them in a burner and the wax burns away from the heat of the nightlight underneath.

You can definately make your own wax melts. I do and container candles too.

You dont need to go to expense of getting a special kit. I use my old pressure cooker and leave the base in and half fil wit water. I then havea metal lipped bowl which fits on the top of the pot of boiling wtaer. I put my soy wax in tha and melt it removing when by using the cooks thermometer I can se it has reached 76 degrees.
Using kitchen gloves I then pour into warmed pyrex jug carefully. I colour and then fragrance with fo at between 6 to 9%. Esentail Oils I wouldnt recommend using at the starting stage as diffeent oils have different volatility and can be as low as 2%
I then pour either into the silicone ice cube moulds from IKea or metal individual bun cases.
Allow to cool and set voila melts.

Beauty of soy is you can wash al equipment in hot soap water

In summary very basic equipment required is

Pan and trivet for base
Metal Bowl or Large pyrex jug
Cooks thermometer
Kitchen gloves
Stirring stick.
Measuring spoon or pippette in mls
Fragrance Oil
Candle safe colours
Silicon bakeware  usually ice cube mould or metal pots

I can pm you for supplier of FO's and colours. Coks thermometer should cost yo about 3.50
I may also have some old metal moulds I could let you have for about 25p each if you want them

I keep thinking that I will make these but haven't got round to it yet.

How do you get the melts out of the metal moulds? do you put them in the freezer or do they just pop out? and I was wondering about the hot wax in the silicone or rubber moulds but it sounds like it would be OK.

I might be organised with this by next Christmas!
