Caurnie Soap

We are a family of soapmakers We started in 1922 officially (although we have an invoice from 1921 for some of the plant we still use) Still in the 1920s building with all the charm (and clutter) of over 8 decades of saponifying. We grow herbs in our gardens, one being the garden surrouding  the Soaperie in Canal Lane in Kirkintilloch. We do cold process glycerine retained soap.
I have been full time soapmaker since 1979 and been helping out since the early 1960s. I must have hand wrapped thousands of soap bars  in my time.  We have made for a number of historic people  Biba shop, BS to  name a few. Caurnie soap still do the original coldprocess soap we started with . We have a board detailing "tested on 85 year old babies" which we always have to explain.

We can produce 5 times the amount of soap we do but choose not to flood the market.
Our round wholesoap has been a familiar sight in wholefood shops throughout the UK but now competes with a number of look alikes.

My goodness, there's a lot of experience there Jim and how wonderful to have had your life totally saturated in such lovlinees.  I think its wonderful that you grow your own herbs to use in your soaps and it would be wonderful to see some examples.  Biba is one of my all time favourite designers and how fantastic it must be to see your work in shops like Biba and BS - you must be very proud.  To keep a business going to so many years and to retain its original charm and character must be bloomin hard work.  I really admire the fact that although you could do more, you choose not to, to (I presume) retain the business's character.

What sort of herbs do you grow Jim?
