Hi, I'm Cath and I am embarking on starting my own soap making business very soon, I have up to now made soaps and candles for family, neighbours, etc. but am recently looking into selling my soaps. I feel I am ready, I have read up on legislation, trading, insurance, etc. part of which I learnt from the GCSTM Glycerine soap making course. I see that you can pay for assessments costing around £139-179 per assessment for a base with 6 variations and 5 ingredients. I was hoping to get a soap base assessment, bath bomb assessment and a type of frosting assessment done. Does this mean I will need 3 different assessments costing in excess of £420 I'm only intending to sell at market stalls and via facebook, this is quite a lot of money to pay out to get me started, does anyone have any advice re the best place to go to see how much it will cost me to set up licences for my recipes, I will be mainly using M&P from JaS and SPsh. I've heard about Scott Grainger being the best Assessor to go to - any advice would be gratefully received, I know I am very green about everything at the moment xxx

I am not quite sure about your SA questions - could be a good idea to speak to Scott.  There looks to be at least two assessments you may need, but he's the guy to speak to.

Not sure if Scott offers any of them as a package, but basically yes you need a separate assessment for each product.

An option is getting one done, and then putting the sale profits back into the business to pay for the others.

I suggest you send Scott & Co an email and tell him about it all and see what he says. He is a great assessor and person.
Comparing prices and service there is no one like him and his team. He is also a member of this forum.

Separate assessments I am afraid. Perhaps, you could pick one thing that you think you can really start with and get the assessment for that and build from there.

Thank you all for your replies. I will contact Scott & Co and ask for their advice. I will probably start with my soaps, then introduce bath bombs, etc as time goes on. I am just trying to run before I can walk to be honest. I am so excited about making my own products for sale, I know I have to learn to be patient!  Very hard when I'm so excited. It' so nice to see there is a genuine up to date forum with other people who are passionate about the same thing. I will also add pics as soon as I update them. xxx

Thank you for all of your replies, yes I think I just have to do one thing at a time, probably soaps first. Then bath bombs, etc. Thank you for your welcoming comments, what I would like to practice is piping tops of soaps but don't know which is best foaming bath whisked with m&p, or cold process whisked? Does anyone have any tips, this is something I would love to introduce in the New Year (on top of a hundred of other things, but yes learn to walk first!  xxx
