 @Vanilla

yep, Hogs tend to wake loads during the winter as they need to keep eating to survive so they wake when the weather is mild enough for their body temperature to be able to cope and stuff their faces before their next nap. We've had a weird winter so far and so they would be out when people don't expect them to be, or they would starve Sad

There is a list of foods they can have here http://www.hogswatch.com/#/feeding/4543647298 and the box thing will definitely help, just keep it covered to protect it from getting soggy (an old tarp or something like that should do) and stuff it with hay/straw and old leaves. Also if you could put a bowl of water out (checked regularly incase it has frozen over) and hopefully he should be warm enough. Of course their are many variables and he may not survive due to many other factors, such as if he has lungworm or another type of parasite overload, but they are just an unfortunate part of nature. The easier time he has finding food and water and shelter, the more chance he has though so having someone look after him by making sure he has those things is a huge bonus. So thankyou for being willing to help him, every hog saved is one more away from them becoming extinct Smiley

Thankyou everyone for being so friendly and welcoming, I promise to not talk Hogs the whole time and will be getting some pics up of my bombs etc soon (bombs are my favourite thing, they are what got me started with this whole soap making addiction!)

I'm just off to make some vanilla, almond and oatmeal soap (once I've chopped some logs, tis a bit nippy today!)

Thanks for your advice on looking after the hog Janie!  I didn't know they wake up throughout the winter.  I will put some water out for him.  The box is underneath an upstairs balcony, so fairly protected from  the rain, but I did think of covering it with something to stop it getting soggy if the rain blows in.

I started off making bath bombs too!  I used to enjoy making them, but find them a bit frustrating- they so easily go wrong!  (I always seem to add just a tinch too much moisture to the mix & then they go a bit warty, which i hate.)

Vanilla, almond & oatmeal soap sounds gorgeous- don't forget to post pics in show-offs!   Wink

Hi Janie!  I am so delighted you are here.  Your pictures and explanation of the hedgehog rescue was very interesting to see and read about.  I love the website and all of the pictures & videos you have on there also.  That little one drinking milk and the babies in the other video are toooooo cute.  I would hate to send them out after raising them  Cry.  I have never seen one close up before; they are just soooo adorable.  It is such a wonderful thing you are doing  Smiley... and how fortunate for the little hedgehogs to have you.  Welcome!
