I will soon be making my own facial moisturizer intended for very sensitive skin. Fresholi seems like the perfect place to purchase the ingredients I need. I have a couple of questions regarding some of the ingredients: 1) Is the Ethox Preservative (Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin) suitable for very sensitive skin types? 2) Is Ethox Preservative (Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin) broad spectrum? Or do I have to add something to it? 3) Is the Emulsifying Powder (Glycerol Mono Stearate SE) suitable for very sensitive skin types? 1. I'm using Ethox in all my products and it works well for all types of skin. But someone else may have more to add to this. 2. Ethox is broad spectrum, I don't add anything else and it keeps well over time but of course depending on your recipe. I use it at 1%. 3. I used to use Glycerol Mono Stearate SE in combination with Sodium stearoyl lactylate, it did not work alone for my recipes. It is mild and seem to work with any skin type. I think Eva has said, more or less, what I would say. Of course, the best way to see if it meets your requirements it to do some small test batches first. The emulsifying powder won't work very well on its own but if you use in combination with something like cetyl or cetearyl alcohol, it is very mild. Another question about the Ethox, I intended to use it at 0.5% to reduce the chance of it causing skin irritation. Would you recommend using it at 1%? Or should 0.5% be sufficient? When I first started out and had recipes I wanted to keep, I had jars and bottles standing in various environments with creams for more than a year to see how it acted over time. I also tried different ratio on emulsifiers, different emulsifiers, different combos of emulsifiers, different preservatives and so on. To find the best stability and best feel on the skin. The research and testing stages are very important, first to find "the ultimate recipe" and then to find how well it keeps in anything from freezing cold to warmth by the lamp in the bathroom. ;D If you have "a subject/guinea pig" with very sensitive skin I suggest you do small batches and test on that person. with skin sensitivity, there isn't a single answer. You can react to any ingredient. I would suggest trying a range of formulation/oils/preservatives and do patch test in different areas. Your skin will tell you what works for you. Leave out fragrance/EO For preservative, always assume the worst and use upper level of recommended. Keep in airless container. Preservatives that are blended (with more ingredients) have lower sensitivity (because lower levels from each preservative) and better coverage spectrum... It looks less appealing to customers, but in theory better. That is what I've been advised. |
