Title: Do Farmer's Markets in your area
Post by: Mona on March 20, 2014, 11:05:40 PM
exclude crafts besides Food and Food related products such as pottery or wooden chopping boards? I am being denied access to one such market on the Island and it is really making my blood boil! It's a Council owned Farmer's Market but the stall holders there keep it only for food producers. There are people there that come from areas not on the Island, and are not farmers, yet because they sell foody stuff, they are welcomed. And I, actually live on an Island Farm and make all my products by hand, on a farm, on the Island and yet I can not sell my stuff there! pss me off, calling themselves Anglesey Farmer's Market and hardly any of them are Farmers or from Anglesey :tantrum:! :(
sorry to come here to let off steam   >:(

Celyn Farmers' Market is food related only in Mold but allows other crafts in its other venues (or did - haven't checked it out this year)

It seems that they all have their own rules to which they adhere.  I know there's one in Leicestershire, where products on sale must have been produce using (at least in part) local ingredients, but it doesn't have to be foody.  I know a couple of people that stand there, selling soap etc.... because their products meet the criteria.  I can imagine it is frustrating, particularly because you know people stand there who don't 'fit' the usual criteria for a farmers market, whereas you seem a much more obvious fit.   :buttrf: :buttrf:

It is frustrating, I'm going to try to have a chat with the local councillor if I get time today, see what he has to say about it. Will keep y'all updated soon as I get some sense out of him! xx :spbox:

I think that is quite common to have only foody stuff. Borough market here in London has similar policy. The criteria is to do with product and not necessarily where it's from, though localish or something different would get priority.

I know some that organise seperate farmers market and craft market, while some combine them and put restrictions on number of crafters or number of times they can attend in year. Food markets draw quite a bit of crowd... everyone's got to eat!

A lot of so called craft markets can consist of people buying and selling the same old stuff. Often not even made by them. It is hard to organise a good craft market with interesting and different stalls.
