Title: highest % fragrance you've used in PET bottles
Post by: halfabubbleoffplumb on August 06, 2010, 05:27:36 PM
found some great PET bottles on sale for a room spray for the holidays, just got them in and then realized my linen spray blend (just went with a premade mix for now) recommends 15% fragrance but PET bottles say 5%. woops.  :-\ I've tried 5% and it works okay - plan on using this amount for a fairy dust kids spray - any recommendations or personal experience with using even slightly more?

From my own experience, with some EO's (but not FO's, so not sure if this helps), the EO's becomes really sticky and sort of melts away at the plastic at 100% concentration.  Not sure about lower %'s or FO's though.  Sorry, that doesn't help much does it.

That Fairy Dust Spray sounds so cute!!  :buttrf:

I've also experienced the plastic "melting" on the surface when using some undiluted EOs. Haven't used any big % in plastic PET containers but would be careful with them.

Before I knew any better I was pouring some essential oil from my big bottle into a small bottle to give some to my daughter and the small plastic bottle didn't just melt it completely vanished, disapeared, didn't exist anymore!

EO seems to be OK in HDPE - 'cos that's used by suppliers for larger quantities.

I researched and found a pretty reputable supplier in the US that ships some of their EOs in PET which is why I asked. The supplier I got the bottles from says 5% for PET so that's a big difference. I've done the 100% thing in plastic before - just to portion out an FO for the 10 minutes I needed to make the product - ate through the cup and onto my counter  :mwaha:   I would think that 15% solution should be okay though? (Famous last words  :mwaha: ) I'll save the bottles for next year perhaps and mix up a tester and wait. Unless someone one here has tested that already - EOs or FOs?

Also, I was using FOs for their staying power in the air but only because I don't know how well EOs last once sprayed - can anyone shed a light on that for me? I'd prefer to use EOs but if they don't last, it's not much of a room spray?

When mixing do you make sure that you have a base, middle and top? is that what we are aiming for rather than lots of base and no tops etc?

I'm comfortable with my blends right now (although I'm definitely going to be curling up with that link when I ge the chance- thanks Eva) I just need to know if anyone have stored an EO or FO concentration of 15% in a PET bottle before and how did it work out? Also, do EOs work well in room sprays or does the fragrance fade quickly?

When mixing do you make sure that you have a base, middle and top? is that what we are aiming for rather than lots of base and no tops etc?

And now that Loretta has brought this up, kind of curious about this, too  :)

I try to mix top/mid/base in products that mainly is for scent like EO melts and some creams.

There is also a range within each note group AFAIU, from the very quickly disappearing to the ones that'll last longer. I read numbers for this somewhere but can't find the link now. I'm sure someone of the professionals have more info on that.

Now I'm testing fixatives to see if it makes any difference on how long the scent lasts, especially the top notes.
Anyone have facts on fixatives vs different EOs? Must be some around since I'd presume perfume makers use it.

Eva, I don't know a lot about fixatives (at all) but I read last night in my research on meadowfoam, that it helps maintain fragrance or something like that? (really helpful, huh?) anyway, not sure if you're asking about other EOs for fixatives or carrier oils but I thought I'd let you know what I found. HTH

That's interesting so meadowfoam is a fixative, that is useful to know

oh, please don't take my word for it - I just saw something promising when i was researching something else and was hoping to provide a possible lead. I'll try to find the pages I found last night but someone with more experience may be able to shed some light on this.
