Title: I have a craft fair!!!
Post by: polly on February 17, 2010, 12:10:00 PM
Or rather, fairs. Running before I can walk, but i applied last week to the Glasgow Merchant City craft fair which is on every weekend, sent of photos and she asked me to choose dates. So I chose quite a few, and mu first in on March 20th and 21st.

This fair was one which, long ago when I first though about making soaps, I wanted to do. then, there was no one selling soaps, there is now, but our soaps are different so shouldn;t be an issue.

I've done a few fairs before - my sister sells jewellery so I;ve been with her, or stood in for her and even though I'm naturally shy, I seem to come out of myself and I actually like doing them. And I can't wait.!!!

So this morning'm dancing with joy (and Scott emailed me my SA so this is a GOOD day!)

Now, I just need to make plenty of soaps.  :)

I'm going with 5 ranges of Body Butters (if I get an SA) and soaps with complimentary coloured wrap, plus other soaps to sell as one off. Height, I understand, is key, but I can't find anything fairly cheeply so I need to keep looking.

The plan is to add to the range of products within the scnet range (i.e. I'll be trying bath salts anb bath melts soon) and hopfully lip blams once i find a formula I like.

Just every second one  ;)

My shelf is actually a shoe rack from argos, keep your eyes peeled and you'll find stuff that suits you, at the right price.  :buttrf:

Brilliant - hope it goes well for you.

It sounds like a plan anyway. If you need height, either pop to b&Q and get some pine boards and nail them together to make a small shelf, or have a look at shoe storage. These are usually small cheap shelves. B&Q, Argos, Homebase, Ikea all seem to do them.

This one isn't the most pretty, but it is cheap and you can take it apart and fold it into the car:

ah I see, NTB already posted about show storage...

Thanks guys, I'll be going to B&Q i think to see if they've got some stuff. I saw some lovely shabby chic type cake stands and other bits and bobs in BHS the other day. BUt the other girl who sells soaps has something very similar, and I don't want to copy.

Poor girl, I was looking at her soaps and explaining that I make soaps too and was going to apply to the fair, and it turns out it was her first day. I felt bad for her - Someone coming along and stealing your thunder is not what you need on your first day.

Bless you! But there will always be competition and you need to be prepared to outsell them. It's not nice or easy, but you must make sure your business comes first, no-one else will. I have sometimes found that I do better when there is a competitor stall as I up the ante!  ;)  :buttrf: :buttrf:

Fantastic news Polly - good for you.  From what I understand, being a regular at the same places really helps establish regular/repeat customers.  How brilliant for you.  Congratulations on your SA too  :)  :buttrf:

It's undercover, thankfully. It;s in the merchand city square in Glasgow, so it's a large square surrounded on all sides by pubs/resteraunts. It's a loveley place to have lunch, sit on the indoor patio bit of your chosen pub, and watch the fair. Hubby and I like going there.

It's mostly pictures and jewellery, with a few others. Some have been doing this for years cos I remember the tweed bag woman from mine and Hubby's first date (long ago  :D)

Well done, how exciting.

One thing to remember, keep your money safe, and, if you make lots of dosh, keep you notes separate from your money box/bag.

At the County show 4yrs ago, one stall holder kept all her money in a money bag, she thought she was safe, wrong, someone was watching her all weekend, then on the Sunday, they followed her when she went for a coffee and whilst going through the crowds they cut through her money bag from behind!  She never felt a thing and the police thought that they had used the same knife that they use at airports, they are so sharp.

Hope you have a lovely time and hope the sun shines... :buttrf:
