Title: First Craft fair
Post by: Naddy on September 04, 2008, 10:53:39 PM
I've decided to do my first craft fair in Southport in a just over a week. I have no idea what to expect. Does anyone have any tips or pointers for me on the day?

Take a good selection of coins for a cash float - there is a thread somewhere LLL will probably find it.

Do customers expect bags to carry items in?

But don't worry if you don't have any carrier bags - if people are going to a Craft Fair they should take a bag with them.

Have some tissue to wrap goods though, and/or some paper bags, I often buy a few from my local friendly corner shop.

I put out samples of some of the product for people to try. I does help them decide to buy if they can smell or try it on.

The craft fair was a little disappointing in the end. The main problem was that the average age of visitor was about 50. My products are aimed at the younger 20-30 year old market. Secondly visitor numbers were low. There weren't many busy tables.

I did pick up quite a few pointers and had a nice day out. I will try it again and improve on my display and marketing material for next time.

Here's a pic the only one we took before the batteries ran out.

Shame it was disappointing for you Nadine - but Craft Fairs can be so variable, your next one could be just the opposite.

All good experience Nadine, were you selling the hair products? maybe look more locally ???, I thought Chorlton in the past, quite a lot of people who are into more natural /spiritual/hippy dippy lifestyles (y'know with Unicorn Grocery and such likes on Beech Road) and also more african/afro carbibean people too :buttrf:

looks like a well set up display, deep one-colour background to set off the products really well, height, info sheets, great! Sorry it wasn't as busy as it could have been, but its all good experience.

I know chorlton quite well and the hubby loves unicorn. Do they ever have any fairs around there.

There's a really large fair coming up in Bolton, so I think I'll try my luck there.

your stall looked lovely and well set up !

me and hubby did our first car show last weekend and we had a similar problems the weather put everyone off coming out ! so instead of 6 thousand visitors there was about 500 shame really but fun all the same !

your next show will be fab !

Nadine,

Where abouts was the fair in Southport? i live in the merseyside area and am finding it really hard tracking down the craft fairs round here. Maybe i'm looking in the wrong place? your stall looks amazing, thank you for providing a picture :)

I've just found this list (http://www.creativecrafts-online.co.uk/html/events_.html) (stalls could be pricey though) - perhaps you could go and look at one of the February ones and see whether it's your type of fair.
