Title: Put a face to the name
Post by: Helen on August 30, 2007, 04:52:57 PM
Hi,

Today, one of the members suggested that the community may be strengthened by putting up photos of yourself, kind of like a face to the name, sort of thing.  I thought it was a great idea although, as I explained to the member, I may need to have some of those professional jobbies done before I plastered my mush over the site, lol.

It could form a separate gallery; name, photo, and a little intro to you and what you do/make & any special links you would like to include?  It can be public or private.  For now I'd just like your initial thoughts.   ;)

I just tried adding a pic (not of me) to my profile info but had the message that the upload directory was not writable so the avatar insert would not work.

(don't know if it's supposed to be like this but in the profile editing pages it looks as though a pic can be uploaded, I thought it could be an alternative option to a gallery)

That's a good idea Elaine.  Kestrel is just having a bit of a stress about a little IT matter at the mo' - well it's rather a big matter so I'll approach him with this when things are a little quieter on the Western Front, lol.

But it would be good!  ;)

I've just thought also that because they'd be only little pics it would save on webspace for galleries etc.

I will need to do this as well.  ;)

I use my photos to keep the flys out of the bathroom, lol  :D

Hi all,

You can now upload a photo of yourself (if you wish to of course) as an avater so now we can put a face to the name!

Mine will be along soon (just need to have a little 'work' done first before the pro-style photo shoot, lol.  Not really, I'll dig one out from somewhere... save a copy & print it if you wish so you too can keep the flys out of your bathroom!  ;D

I saw the announcement before I scrolled down here!!

Don't have a photie ATM so I'll put my logo; "briallen" is Welsh for "primrose" which was my nickname in scool (smutty joke in the third form, completely forgotten by the time I was in senior sixth and everyone down to the first formers knew me as "Prim" - I doubt whether some of the little'uns knew my real name).

How did you do that? I can't seem to find the way...

Sorry -  went for a wander and to make a Kentucky Coffee (as in "Gaelic" but with Bourbon instead of Scotch) 'cos there was some cream left over after raspberries and cream.

From the top menu click on profile.

Then from the side menu click on "froum profile information".

You then have the option to select from an existing set, a website or your hard drive.

Mine is "one I made earlier" a JPEG (.jpg) file of 80 pixels by 80 pixels and 100dpi.

It may not be necessary to reduce your file to the appropriate dimensions and resolution - some avatar upload facilities do this for you but I'd already made this for Skype, which requires the pic to be of a specific size.

If you're not sure how to resize your photo email it to me (addy in my profile) and I'll do the necessary and send it back.

I've still got to do mine!

Kestral introduced himself (finally) last night (see intros, he's a fine figure of a man as you will see from his avatar).  If you have any techy questions, put it to him, he's a bit of a Mr Fixit and a very important part of the Fresholi equation (but don't tell him I said that, wouldn't want his head getting too big, lol).  ;D

Kestral set about working his magic and now they do here too!  Fly, fly away.....................  :D

Hello Fee,

The reason your wings didn't flap is because the uploader has to re-size images larger than 100px wide and tall.

It doesn't do animated .gifs, so it converts them to the nearest format with transparency (.png).

If your avatar is 100px wide and tall, then the uploader will leave the file alone.

And your wings will flap.

Yeay! My wings flap again!

Thankyou Kestrel.

I have no idea how big it is - i've just uploaded it as avatars elsewhere.

I just noticed you did it!!  Yeay!!!!!!   ;D

So tell me, when was that picture taken then? lol

I'm loving the wings, Fee.

That picture was taken in my front room (hence the dodgy wall colour) in the middle of writing my dissertation (about a month ago). I may put up a new one when it has been handed in, but it's quite an accurate representation at the moment. Except that I don't normally carry the big stick around.

I just love the way you do your make-up, any tips?

So if you don't normally carry a big stick around, what was the stick for in the picture?  :-\

Title: Re: Put a face to the name

Actually, I put the makeup on specifically for the picture - because my skin's so pale, it was difficult to make out where my eyes started. Not a good look, but usually I just put up with it  :D Anyway, I used a liquid eyeliner (with more precision than usual) and mascara. So simple, but it really does work!

The stick is one I bought for Kiaido Ryu (my martial art) a little while ago. It's rather a nice stick (a bo staff, made out of red oak, although that doesn't come out very well in the picture), and I thought it might like to be included, as it spends most of its time sitting there doing nothing. As with most things in my life, I think it will get more attention when the dissertation's in.

Eventually a conventional photo may arrive under someone's name!!!

Wow Fee!  It's just like I imagined you to look!!  Aw wook at that wuvly puppy dog!!  Well mine will be up shortly (hopefully - Kestrel's on task right now).

Abigail, thank's for the tips & I can see that with such a pale complexion, if you don't have make-up on, it could be a problem in the snow?  And the stick!  With such a finely crafted stick I would certainly find many a use for it.  It's a shame that you can't see the grain in the picture, maybe you could do a close up sometime so we can see what a fine example of a red oak bo staff it truly is.  You must be so proud.  ;D

Well there you go!  If Fee can do it then so can I  ;D  Although I must say, Fee took the easy way out by posting to the message and not using her picture as an avatar and therefore avoiding being slattered all over the forum, lol   :D

Its a lovely avatar!

Now that's something I dont get told every day  :-[ (by the way, that emoticon is supposed to be a red face but to me, it look's just plain miserable, lol...  I must get Kestrel on the emoticon task).  Thank you Fee but you are being far too kind.  I don't like having my photo taken, not one little bit and there are VERY few of them.  This was just about the best one I could find so may be misleading  8)

I'm going down Fee's route - like you I don't have my photo taken very often (though I don't don't see why you don't like it, the results attractive!).

This was a couple of years ago at a small tractor show with a working area
(no use at all for an avatar!)

Now that's just cheating, I think you are all cheats, lol.  That's a fine tractor you had there Elaine, be proud and show it off!

I must admit that having a face to the name does give you a better sense of community but, at the same time, I cringe whenever I scroll the threads at seeing my chops, so I can appreciate the cheat's way out.

Maybe if we approached this at a different angle.  Maybe if I put the pictures into a gallery (for registered members only), members can see who's who without the world and its best buddy seeing?   ;)

We can wait... we can wait.... lol!  We know all know that you are just teasing and the tractor is just one step closer to the big reveal.  Like I said, we can wait... we can wait...    :D

OK you asked for it!

I was searching both computers and memory cards when I remembered a newspaper cutting from last year; the tractor's still there but I trimmed the pic down.

Sorry about the mafia look - but my specs are photochromic 'cos bright sunlight is uncomfortable. The hat is genuine Oz, Child sent it to me when she was doing the obligatory backpacking Thailand and East Coast Australia during the year between degree courses - in fact she didn't decide to take a second degree until she was halfway down the coast, thank heaven for the internet!

Woo hoo!!!  It's Elaine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have one of those hat's Kestrel bought me when he went to Oz (not backpacking - much more boring than that, business) AND there's a photo of me wearing it (I may post it but if I do get the courage up, it will be up temporarily & then I'll find a reason to delete the post, lol)
