Title: Crochet
Post by: Amanda82 on January 04, 2013, 11:17:24 AM
I want to learn how to crochet and I've been looking through lots of beginners videos and such on YT but I'm still finding it really difficult with my being a lefty and everything I see being for right handers.  Anyone here crochet and know of some good resources?

I can but mostly remembered via YT... I was taught years ago but took to knitting more.  But I'm right handed so not sure re left handed.  Can you Google left handed crochet and see what comes up? I enjoy it, it's faster than knitting I think.

Look at this video for left handed. :)

Ooops, that didn't work. Ok, here is the link. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So7C7gtILRo)

I'll crochet a granny square if it kills me LOL!

Thank you ladies.  Not a whole lot comes up but I'll investigate YT again.  I find the videos are too fast moving mostly.  Mostly I've been ending up with a tangled ball of mess on the end of my needle.

I've seen that video.  It's good but I want to learn how to do a granny square.  There's a guy on YT called mikeysmail (or something) and he does a left handed one but he moves so fast.

I would take the wool and stop and start the video as I worked along with it.

I'll just keep at it I guess :)  I only got the niggle after I stayed in Lesley's house in scotland and had a huge blanket made out of granny squares and every one was different.  Beautiful!

Hi Salach, I decided to start to crochet some soap savers just before christmas and I bought a wonderful little book, very little, but it does have diagrams for left handed and right handed people, I am a bit of both cos I was taught to crochet by my mother who was a leftie, but I am right handed, so while crocheting I look totally cack handed whether you are a leftie or a rightie. Anyway, as I say this book is totally brilliant as it shows you how to start, from a complete beginner. It is called Crochet unravelled A clear and concise guide to learning t crochet. by Claire Bojczuk.
Hope this helps. :)

I don't know if it helps or if I am too late, but www.ravelry.com is the place most knitters/crocheters (at least those with access to computers) go for help/patterns and so on. There is a forum as well but I have read several instructions "translated" in crochet with video links for left handed crocheters. Good luck, it is an absorbing and surprisingly artistic craft to enjoy.  :)

I am a natural leftie who was trained into my right hand as a child.  It made me ambidextrous but I still reach for things with my left hand.

My mum is a leftie, it caused problems when she was teaching me to write! ;D

Post by: Amanda82 on January 05, 2013, 12:24:27 AM
My mam is ambidextrous too and I can also use both hands for writing etc.  my brain just isn't working that when it comes to crochet.  My poor gran is a natural lefty and when she was small at school her left arm was strapped behind her back as it was the 'devil hand.' She was forced to use her right. Good old Catholic Ireland eh?

Title: Re: Crochet
Post by: Lindy on January 05, 2013, 01:34:48 AM
That was done to my uncle too.  So Grandma made sure every child born a leftie was trained into their right hands before school.  Here they would rap the knuckles of anyone trying to use their left hand to write....  What a cruel society.

Not very well.  My crochet books still haven't arrived and I'm finding the tutorials on YT really hard to follow.  Can't wait for them to get here.  Haven't also had that much free time as I've been working late this week and had a lot on.  Can't wait to master the granny square though!  Good job on yours though!   :buttrf:  It looks great!!!

ooh I love crochet and knitting, I made my son a bobble hat last year and we get people stopping us when we're out and asking us where we bought it, which is hilarious cos it's just something I knocked up when I was doing farmers markets inbetween customers. I've still got the blanket I knitted for my daughter while I was in labour, although after 17 years it's looking a bit dishevelled.............

I just don't have enough time now to commit to proper crochet and knitting, loads of wool etc but no hours left in the day  :(

I learned years ago, but am right handed.  Glad to hear you didn't give up... congratulations!  My sister, who lives about 6 hours from me, gave me some eyelash yarn that she purchased to make a scarf.  She never could figure out how to do it and gave up, so I made her the scarf on our drive home and gave it to her the next time I saw her.

Can't wait to see pics of you granny square

EJ thanks for that.  I was using US terminology.  Who would have thought there would be differences in the terms in crochet of all things :o

Lisa yay!!!  Sorry for the confusion of terms.....  :-[

I have been trying a bit of crochet too!! Have you seen that 'Knit and Stitch' magazine? It gives beginners instructions for knitting, crochet and embroidery. It comes with a DVD which is quite good....it's only for righties though  :(. You get a free pair of knitting needles and two balls of wool. So far I think I have the hang of the chain and slip stitch...gonna try double crochet later!

and the book I used was

Stitch and bitch, the happy hooker.
