Title: Is anybody doing anything crafty at the mo?
Post by: Joy on April 15, 2008, 07:14:07 PM
Is anybody making, sewing, knitting etc anything at the mo. I have just finished a small quilt that was made using repro Dutch fabrics. I hate it, can't think why I ever bought the fabric apart from I was in Amsterdam at the time. But I have cut out the fabric for a chenille bag. I am going to give this to my daughter for her birthday I think.

I also cover terracotta pots and have one or two of those that need finishing as well as a scrapbook or 2 that need finishing as well.  Too many hobbies I have.  :hap3:

I'm crocheting; making me wax melts & doing the occasional bit of cross stitch.

Other than that, you may like to know I make the occasional croap.  :mwaha:

I can only seem to have one hobby at a time. I throw myself into them 100% then I usually get bored. So far hasn't happened with soap  ;)

I'm crocheting another hat for Child - she says her felted climbin/rambling hat is a bit too warm on some days (well she did want one which wouldn't let the wind through).

So I'm using some hand spun and dyed almost DK ply which I bought in Masham and will leave it unfelted, might brush it though.

(bl**dy boring - just double crochet, am tempted to put a random blob [crochet version of bramble stitch] dotted around)

Go mad EJ and put some blobs in it! :mwaha:

Hmm, blobs sound good EJ, adds texture to an otherwise plain textured piece of apparel.  ;D

Brownies? Never eat them. Unless they're warm and covered in cream.  :mwaha:

Not sure whether I'll have enough wool for blobs - not using a pattern. I have 2 balls of wool so will see how far down the hat-block I get with one.

In any case it's a practical hat  - not a fashion accessory (might put a pocket on the side).

I'd really like to make some soy wax melts just to use at home, can anyone point me toward a supplier of wax, fragrance etc, I've looked at candelights but they are out of stock of a couple of key things I'd need.
I'd love to have something vanilla-ry, I usually buy the French Vanilla Yankee Candles but I fancy having a go myself.

There's candle stuff here (http://www.candlemakers.co.uk/cmproduct/index.html).

Thornes Beekeeping (https://secure.thorne.co.uk/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/millhouse/thorne/shop/shania?ACTION=THISPAGE&THISPAGE=page35.html&ORDER_ID=106269826) has a range of stuff also.

Thanks Elaine, I don't want to make candles, just the little wax melts to put in an oil burner.  I could just buy some ready made from ebay but I want to make them, more fun that way!

I'm cross stitching (fifth girl in my family to do it) and learning how to bake, if that counts as being crafty!

I've nearly finished a knitted and felted bag.  Just got to sew on flowers and leaves...I'm not keen on the sewing up part of knitting.

Other crafty stuff-outside bath and body...making jewellery and turning my too small jeans into skirts. I am crap at threading the machine which means it takes ages to do anything on it! Would love to learn how to knit or crochet but it looks too complicated for me!

Sounds like everyone is a busy bee. Crocheting is quite easy AC, easier than knitting in my opinion. I didn't like the sewing up bit of knitting either. Cross stitch is cool, it was my main pastime for years until I got into quilting which is now my first love well equal first with croapmaking. Need to see some pics in the craft gallery. I show you mine if you show me yours. ;D

I have almost finished crocheting a large granny square blanket in lots of shades of pink, green, yellow and cream, Half the fun was buying all kinds of different bits of wool from charity shops both here in Hastings and in France. The squares are all done, just got to crochet them all together into a blanket now. And as I am going to be a granny again in six months time, I have just started to design another birth sampler in cross stitch. Next on the agenda is a baby cot quilt.

A granny again LLL. How many have you got? I have 2 and one on the way. A little girl I think. So I have a cot quilt to make as well. I'm finding it hard to enthuse about the one on the way though as I've never met the girl. Son's been going out with her off and on for a couple of years but I've never met her.

Not this morning. It was freezing. I'm not sure how many would have seen it at the ungodly time I get my brew in a morning but we had snow. It was white over.

Think AK is referring to crochet or poss knitting. :mwaha:

I am knitting a scarf from my handspun. I dyed some casmere and silk a dusty mid-blue colour and I am doing it in moss stitch. I tend to use simple stitches as a lot complex stitches get lost in the wool especially as I do a lot of angora.
I mainly make scarves these days as preesies as they fit everyone . It is getting out of control as I make 14 last year as Christmas pressies !! What is everyone else doing ?

I keep looking at all my fabric, thinking I really oughta make another quilt one of these days. And then I look at all the beautiful pieces of antique french linen and lace and think I really oughta do something with all that stuff........... so I guess I am in the pre-planning stage, errmm..........

I have a ton of fabric I keep wanting to make into bags but haven't
I have bits and bobs for making candles
I have a half finished cross stitch pattern that I really should complete
I also have a ton of soap ingredients begging to be used :o

Me thinks I need to start organising my time better

I have several quilts that need quilting, several quilts that need making, several cross stitch kits that need finishing never mind the ones that want starting. Apart from that nope.

Are there more stitchers than knitters on the forum ? Apart from Elaine are there any other spinners ?

I got a sewing machine for my birthday this year, back at the beginning of march, I would love to start sewing, customising clothes etc.. but I still haven't even used it, it just looks SO complicated!

I love hand sewing, I'm just very very bad at it. I love jewellery making too, it's so relaxing.

I am feeling pretty rubbish at the moment so maybe I'll have a night off creating me wax creations and lotions and potions and sit on the sofa with my beads.. maybe...

I think there are more stitchers Ruth, do you felt as well as spin?

Wish I had room for a loom - can't even find space for a table model ATM!

Customising clothes is dead easy once you have the know how! I have a ton of useful books that taught me everything i needed to know!

Using a sewing machine? I've got a few books too, one is quite a cool one called 'yeah, I made it myself'. I just need to take the plunge at get on with it, I just have this block that it's going to be so difficult.. but I took the plunge with soaping so I should be able to thread up a sewing machine shouldn't I?!

I've got a load of unfinished x-stitches (and new ones just begging to be started)
A load of unfinished crochet bags & felted purses
Danglies to make (sorry H's little A)

Oh, and a few soaps to be sorted out.

Oh again, a couple of half-knitted scarves lurking somewhere.

(I'm not a soap addict, I'm not)

I have a habit of starting something then losing interest when I see that it's working out OK - unless it's specially for someone.

Hi Elaine

No, I don't do felting. It never really interested me. I did start to learn to weave but then the cats took over . I didn't find at as relaxing as spinning perhaps because I wasn't experienced enough. I do have 3 looms though.
A full sized one which is in storage, a portable one and a little ashford table loom. I also have a large collection of spinning wheels and spinning stools----excessive or what !!! LOL !!!
I love spinning. I find it soooo relaxing. Knitting too.

Can you recommend a good spinning wheel repairer - mine has a tendency for the wheel to slip on the axle/spindle or whatever it's called. I bought it secondhand from a shop which really specialised in old sewing machines and it doesn't look like a recognised make - there's a plate on it with name and phone number (pre STD style) which may have been the maker or the owner.
