Title: citronella oil in candles
Post by: retropants on May 29, 2012, 01:15:08 PM
I have made insect repellant citronella candles for myself yonks ago, but a friend wants to buy 6 big ones from me (300g each) and I am not certain how much is needed / effective per, say, 100g wax. Does anyone know? If it is lots, I'll have to buy more oil, but I have about 30ml I think.

I think you generally use 6-8% on candles, depending on the scent, but I guess you could go even higher, perhaps lower as bugs should have better sense of smell than us.  :mwaha:

Oh, and how much have you been using on your own candles?  If it works with you, it should work for  her too, right?

I made some recently, and I used about 6% citronella EO.... it was effective !
But maybe your mosquitos are more hard than mine ?

I made some lavender and citronella ones - 4% oil in total, 1:3 citronella:lavender. Noticable but not overpowering.

There's a calculator on the Soap Queen site which is quite good, but it only works for one oil at a time so it's no good for mixed fragrances.

Hi Retropants,

The industry standard for candles is 3% but you can get double (6%) and triple (9%) scented candles.

For anyone using plastic or polycarbonate moulds I wouldn't go anywhere near 9% as the fragrance will more than likely damage your moulds by frosting them.
