Thanks Honey - do you have my address? Send PM re postage etc - or what you'd like to swap. Times are hard I know, but is it that bad now Elaine? Ah well (it's not worth going to Llan or Ruthin to buy a couple of pairs for what I need them) I am wondering who is going to be the first to ask why? I'm not saying - unless someone does ask... Title: Re: A Strange Request! Post by: EJ on December 10, 2011, 06:19:04 PM OK - tights will arrive from Honey.
I want to make some more felt bowls and the easiest way to finish off/firm them up is to stuff with poly bags and tie firmly in a tights leg then bung in the tumbledrier when there's a load in. Title: Re: A Strange Request! Post by: Bergamia on December 10, 2011, 07:03:57 PM Ah, how interesting, any pics?

Title: Re: A Strange Request! Post by: Andy on December 11, 2011, 12:20:20 PM Beautiful!
I guess a pic of these in the tumble dryer will not be possible! ;D How does it not damage their shape? What do you use to make them harden? Title: Re: A Strange Request! Post by: EJ on December 11, 2011, 12:37:17 PM To keep the shape I stuff them firmly with poly bags (not many so supermarket bags around now, there's a charge in Wales already, but binliners in various sizes are fine).
Heat and friction firms up the felt (not rock hard mind you) it's known as fulling - the Mongols would roll up the felt for yurts etc., tie behind a horse and gallop off around the steppe - much more fun than rubbing and beating like mad by hand. In the UK and elsewhere water-powered fulling mills were used to firm up fabric by passing it under a series of hammers. Waulking was used in the Highlands and Islands for firming tweed and kilt fabrics. A length was folded over, then someone would hold each side of the roll then lift in unison and bang it down on a solid table - singing to create the rhythm, hence Waulking Songs. It's a matter of shocking the indivdual fibres of the wool so that they open and close their scales and bind together (bit like Rasta locks in hair). Title: Re: A Strange Request!
