Title: hi from yet another newbie
Post by: purplethistle on October 27, 2011, 12:11:53 AM
hello from a newbie. I have a severe allergy to SLS so i decided (in a fit of frustration) that i would make my own shampoos etc as it seems to be something that is badly needed in my area judging from the people i speak to at my local clinic. This sounds perfectly plausible until you are plunged into the world of legalities and data sheets. So i really am a total novice other than using a melt and pour kit from hobby craft ages ago  :P.

Hi purplethistle.

I started from a similar position - allergic to a lot of synthetic fragrances so I started using essential oils. Then I started buying fragrance free bases, and eventually thought "why not make my own bases?"

After a bit of research I realised I could make much better ones than the commercial ones, which were full of crap. Not only that but a lot of 'fragrance free' products contain a masking fragrance, so they aren't fragrance free at all!

Hi and welcome. :hi:  Where are you from? Many people are sensitive to SLS, many will also claim they are but not really understand what/which ingredient is causing their sensitivity but assume it is SLS due to marketing hype used by some companies. There are many alternatives to SLS. Don't worry so much about regs., you will get to grips with that easily enough over time. As it takes time to learn to formulate and produce a good, functional, stable and economically viable end product. So my advice would be, start playing with ingredients, see what you like and what works for you (you can't please all people all the time), enjoy the learning process and don't forget we love pics. Successes and failures, we share them, it helps all of us learn.

Eire

Hi and welcome!  I have tried the odd bit of shampoo making, didn't find it the easiest thing to get to grips with but you'll be fine if you persevere!  There are alternatives to sls, although from reading labels I've noticed that commercial manufacturers seem to be using it less & less in shampoos now, perhaps due to negative publicity sls has had in the last few years.  Good luck with making your own though, it's very exciting embarking on making your own products!  Loads to learn so you can never get bored.   :)
