Title: I'm Keeping an Eye on This
Post by: EJ on July 25, 2011, 08:15:32 PM
It's a Triticale hybrid - there's a field of it next to the tractor shed and it should be goodly for making Welsh Fan corndollies.

Jones asked the estate manager if I could cut some when it was ready (I need to get it a week or so before it's ready for the combine harvester) and he said OK as long as I didn't take half the field!

Oooh good one EJ and you can actually say jand harvested too. How long do you have to dry them before you can start creating?
Or is it better when still fresh so its tighter?

When it gets to the right stage - i.e. colour changed but the top leaf notch still green I can use it straight away - but if I don't have time that day or the next then I have to let it dry completely and then soak in hot water for an hour or so, drain and wrap in damp cloth the day before I want to use it.

A great find. Good of the farmer to let you have a pick.
Am looking forward seeing your beautiful creations.  :buttrf:

Looking across at the field from the back of our house it looks about ready - certainly did yesterday in the sun. (camera on zoom)

So I shot off to the field at midday armed with scissors and squeezing the jeep between the "Road Closed" signs.

It did look reasonable as I entered the field.

Needs a few more days though, even if it's sunny all weekend (not likely) it won't be ready for combining at the beginning of next week.

Cool. Though I now have an image of a peeping tom with a zoom lens. :mwaha:
