Title: Hello, i'm new
Post by: Gracey on March 30, 2011, 05:14:31 PM
Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello to everyone.  I'm an Aromatherapist and I have been making a lovely scrub made of sugar, oil and essential oils.  There are a few problems with it 1. it doesn't have any preservatives in it and 2. during hot weather the oil and sugar separate.  When i've tackled this problem I would then like to have it safety assessed and get a licence to sell it.  Can anyone help me PLEASE!! i'm really stuck and can't move forward with it at all.

Thankyou so much if anyone is willing or able.

Grace

Hi Gracey and welcome to the forum. If using only oils and sugar, and enough oil to cover each grain and some left over, it will eventually sit on the top. It can just be stirred back in by the customer, it isn't a problem. You can use less oil, but you would have a 'looser' scrub. You could use a hard oil or butter as part of you formula, such as coconut oil, shea butter or cocoa butter, there are others. Melt this in your oil and once cool enough mix in your sugar and EO's, this will rsult is a soft sloid scrub. There are many options to explore, my advice is to take your time, play with a few different ingredients, see what works for you and how you like it.
In relation to preservative, that's a mine field. Your scrub is an anhydrous product, therefore doesn't need a preservative. Some people still opt to add a preservative because of the possible introduction of water.
What % essential oils are you using?
And the unwritten rule here is, we love and demand pics of your products, don't be shy. :D

Hello Grace, welcome to the forum.

I can't add anything to what Eire has said about your scrub consistency.

Some safety assessors give more help and advice than others - you'll find a very helpful one posting on this forum, name of Scott.

(he's not been around much during the last few days but he's bound to drop in soon)

Welcome!

Scrub sounds lovely but you'll find that it takes a lot to move from making for yourself to making for sale but you'll enjoy the journey!

Oh and pics, we love our pics!!

Afternoon everyone, I just wanted to say a LARGE thankyou to everyone who has welcomed me and been very supportive.

I haven't got any pics of the scrub (yet)!  Even if I did, I wouldn't know how to upload it onto here.

In response to the percentage of EO's used in the scrub this is 5.7% and the Scrub will be used whilst in the shower so highly likely that it will get water in it from wet hands so will probably need a challenge test.

BTW, has anyone purchased one of Fresholi's safety assessments?

Thanks again peps.  Grace x

Hi Gracey, just to warn you (gently!!) the % is on the high side, I think most assessors will say 3% max for most EO's, then 2% for photosensitive etc ones. Hope this is helpful. Can't wait to see pics of what you have been up to :)

Really, have I worked it out wrong (never was any good at maths :-[).  I've used 500ml of oil to that I add the sugar then I add 25 drops of Essential oil.  This is usually enough to make 2 pots.  Thanks for your (gentle) comment  :)

Ah that does indeed sound like you've worked it out wrong- 25 drops of EO is probably roughly equal to 1ml.  So 1ml of EO to 500ml of oil, is hmm 0.2%?  And that is not including the weight of the sugar.  If you're going to make stuff for sale you'll need to measure everything by weight (including EOs- use a jeweller's scale to weigh these.)  Then you'll need to know what % of each ingredient is used to make up the total product.  HTH!   :)

BTW, has anyone purchased one of Fresholi's safety assessments?

I think you mean Scott (cosmeticsafetyassement.com)?  Yes quite a few here have his SAs, me included.  He comes highly recommended!   :D

Hello and welcome Gracey!   :hi:    I don't have more to offer on your sugar scrub question.  But if you haven't tried sea salt scrubs yet, you may enjoy them also.  The sea salt can introduce minerals to the scrub, however, the salt can sting on freshly shaved legs.  I've read that some people prefer sugar because it is a softer grain.  But, I like them both.  Look forward to seeing pics :)
