Title: shelf life of soy candles
Post by: halfabubbleoffplumb on March 07, 2011, 07:07:36 PM
any idea on this? I suppose it has to do with how long the fragrance will last but I have a bunch of wax and jars and holiday fragrance and it would all take up so much less room if I put the fragrance in the wax and the wax in the jars! too early for x-word stock making?

Gosh, you plan ahead, don't you?!  ;)

I think you can do that, and if you keep it all 'sealed' in the jar, it should last.

Ive got wax melts I made 2 yaers ago stil smelling lovely. I do store them in a plined plastic box though and dont laugh try to sucka lot of the airt out before i clip the final corner with a straw.

Far easier to store em in a sealed placcie bag but not in contact wit the wax i was told as some plastics can leach the scent out.

So if you are making candles a lil paper top slipped over the wick then put in a cardboard box in the dark.

nice! how is the bloom? I know it makes a difference what wax you're using but if I'm using sealed glass jars (which I am) will that help?

I dont suffer from bloom on my container candles.

Or I stack the wax melts in these cute lil hat boxes can get 4 in. They definately keep the smell in.

I got them from a store calle qs which is like  a seconds quality shop. They were in a stack of 3 one inside the other for £2. So I snatched up quite a few. Unfortunately all used up now.

Just be aware that if you're making your container candles in tins fo's with vanilla in them will probably make the tin rust & discolour around the edges during storage.
I just found a batch of delicious chocolate mint cream soy candles in tins that I'd tidied away & forgotten about & they've all gone rusty looking but boy do they smell good!

oh, no! they sound lovely - so sorry they got rusty. thanks for the tip - BTW, do FOs with vanilla eventually discolor soy wax like it does soap?

The hat boxes are so cute!  I'm off to Poundland to see if I can find anything suitable!

I don't colour my soy candles so the vanilla discolouration can be more noticable, I've also found that my pillars discolour where the wax is exposed so under the cigar label is the colour it was when poured but above & below that it's considerably darker. I guess if I was a bit more together I'd put them away unlabelled so if they are kept in the dark they might not discolour so badly, but then I'd forget what I'd made or lose them for a while!

The vanilla discolouring isn't ugly in my candles it makes the soy a deeper colour but I'm not sure what they'd be like if I dyed them.

Enjoy your chandling & fingers crossed all will go well.

Oh & I just remembered, if you make votives or use wick sustainers in your pillars they can rust over time too so it might be an idea to store these without their wicks & just put them in just before they go out for sale.

ooo, really good tips - thanks, Sally! great info on the vanilla - I don't color mine either so it's good to know what to expect. I have an eggnog FO that I love - happy to have it burning in the spring, even! but I've not had one long enough to know if it discolors! thank you  :buttrf:

Thanks for that I hadnt had vanill along enough to know it discolours partly because it makes me sneeze and I only did it for custom orders. Ooops

I think it discolors after you burn it (just the part that melts) but if it discolors evenly when stored I think that would be okay.
