Title: Newbie Soaper
Post by: TerrisGold on February 22, 2011, 05:10:25 PM
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say hello.    I made my first batch of CP soap on Sunday and have already done a Happy Dance!  (as mentioned by Joy James in her book "Make your own soap").

I also know that it makes bubbles as Joy says that if you can't wait until your soap is cured to find out if it lathers, then to put on some gloves and wash your hands......Yay, a truly happy moment.

Top Tip - check your ceiling when making soap, as a spider decided to do a bungy jump just as I was stirring my oils.   Not the additive I was thinking of.

At the moment I'm reading everything I can about making soap - I think it could become addictive.

I love your site, and everyone seems so friendly.

Theresa x

Hi Theresa and welcome. That first happy dance is the most special one, isn't it? There is loads of info here and really helpful people. Have you used soapcalc yet?

Thanks for replying, have just taken a few pics, but only one came out properly...........

can I just say that:

it's a bit pathetic as I only made a small batch, and some of that struggled to come out of the mould!
Some of the mould came off onto the soap with the Lye interaction :(   It was a really cute non-stick mini loaf tin as well
I added some Tonka Bean Oil for colour and smell and neither came out ok

BUT

I'm still excited about making soap

Tx

Oh, and I forgot to mention that when putting the soap to bed for 24hrs, my cat thought it was a fab new place to sleep and so must have tilted the moulds.......

2nd Top Tip - Keep pets away from your soap

Hello Eire,

I have, but typically, before knowing whether I was going to like making soap, I was checking out the web one evening and found some software called SoapMaker3 and couldn't resist buying it.................    Having said that I don't regret it as it's a great programme and the bit I like the most so far, is the moving graph.   As you key in the different base oils and butters you want to use, the graph changes to show whether you'll get bubbles, long lasting bar etc. etc.   Great fun.    It then does the same calculations as soapcalc.

Always a sucker for some new sofware!

Theresa

Wow, as for 'could become addictive', way too late. :D You're there, hook, line and sinker. I just wanted to say no matter how good a book is, always run it through a lye calc.
You're bars are a nice cramy colour, well done. You can use anything as a mould, shoe box, milk cartons, grease proof paper is your friend. Silicone muffin tins/trays are ideal and won't react with the lye.

Hi Theresa!  I made my first CP soap last Sunday too and like you, my first batch was from a recipe in Joy James' book, being Recipe No. 3!

Yours looks really nice - have you tried the tongue test yet?

I did, I just had to give it a go.   It gives quite a zap doesn't it, but not as bad as I was expecting.     Have you checked yours for lather and bubbles?

I got no zap from mine - which recipe did you use?  I checked for lather and bubbles and it behaves very nicely, didn't take the skin off my hands or anything!

Have just checked out your recipe, it sounds gorgeous.    I'd love to see a pic of it, and was the Rose oil strong enough to be noticeable?     So exciting this soap making malarky!

I have posted a pic of mine in the soapy show off section.  I didn't use rose oil, I used black cherry instead (don't like the smell of roses) and it smells amazing!

I had a look at Soapmaker 3 and while it sounds like an amazing program, it's $49!!!!  That will have to wait quite some time before I can justify that!

I made one up from SoapMaker3 software, but looking at other recipes I think it's the same as a suggested basic soap.    I used:

86g Olive Oil, 96g Coconut Oil (solidified), 78g Palm Oil (solidified), 37g Lye, 85g ordinary tap water as I can't get distilled, 1ml Tonka Bean Oil.

I have yet to see how it turns out.    Can't wait until some butters I've ordered come as I'm dying to use Shea and Cocoa butter.  I'd like to try your one as well.

Theresa

I had a go at a White Lavender Soap as I was dying to use some EO, but at trace it was creamy not white................and another with more ingredients: coconut, olive, shea, castor oil and palm.   I was aiming at something moisturising.

I just love mixing the oils and butters, even writing about it makes me want to get back in the kitchen ;D
