Well, I'm really not an expert but at a guess I would imagine it dulls some of your senses, sight, hearing, speech (if its one with a snooker ball that goes in the mouth) which presumably heightens the other senses of touch and smell, they all seem to have nose holes.
Anyone that knows better, please feel free to enlighten us further!
Or why not watch Pulp Fiction, there's a quite disturbing scene with a gimp
